A Note from Your Hosts

info
A Note from Your Hosts

Welcome to Casa Luna — we are so glad you're here. This bungalow is our second home, and we've spent the better part of a decade collecting the books, rugs, and records you'll find in every room. Please use all of it.

There is coffee in the blue tin on the counter, good olive oil next to the stove, and a small library of neighborhood maps in the entry drawer. The record player works best with the volume below 6 after ten o'clock — the walls are thin, and our neighbor Edna is a light sleeper.

If anything at all goes sideways, text us first, then call. We almost always pick up.

§ 03

House Rules

rules

Quiet hours are from 10 PM to 8 AM. Please respect the neighbors — this is a residential street and many of them have been here for decades.

No smoking of any kind inside the house. There is a small ashtray on the back porch if you need one.

Pets are welcome with prior arrangement. Please do not let them on the furniture — we've tried, and the couch has not forgiven us.

Maximum four guests overnight. The living room is beautiful but not a bedroom.

Before you leave, please start a load of dishwasher, turn the thermostat to 62°, and leave the keys on the entry table.

How Things Work

howto
How Things Work

The front door sticks in wet weather. Pull the handle firmly toward you as you turn the key — it'll give.

The thermostat is a Nest; tap the ring to wake it, twist to change the temperature. It learns your schedule after a day or two.

For the fireplace, there are starter logs in the basket and long matches on the mantel. The flue opens with the small brass lever — pull down.

The record player is a Rega Planar. Please don't move the tonearm while a record is spinning. There is a stack of records you're welcome to play — we especially love the Nina Simone near the top.

If Something Goes Wrong

emergency

For any true emergency, dial 911 first, then text us.

For a plumbing issue, the water shutoff is in the basement — first valve on the right as you come down the stairs. Our plumber, Marcus, is listed in the kitchen drawer and will come quickly if you use our name.

For power outages, the breaker box is also in the basement, labeled. PGE's outage line is in the same drawer.

24-hour pharmacy: Walgreens at 940 SE 39th. Urgent care: ZoomCare on NE Sandy, open until 10.

The Neighborhood

A handful of places we keep returning to — chosen with care, not compiled by algorithm.

Restaurants & Bars

Coffee & Tea

  • 01

    Heart Coffee Roasters

Bright, almost floral light roasts. Quiet enough to work from. Try a Gesha if they have one on pour-over.

  • 02

    Either/Or

A small-but-beloved corner café with exceptional milk drinks and pastries from Tournant. Morning only.

  • 03

    Coava

Airy flagship shared with a woodworking shop. The cortado is the house pour.

To See & Do

  • 01

    Lower Macleay Trailhead

The best entry into Forest Park — a gentle creek walk up to the Witch's Castle ruin. Bring water.

  • 02

    Powell’s City of Books

The largest independent bookstore in the world. Plan an hour, stay for three. Rare book room upstairs.

  • 03

    Lan Su Chinese Garden

    A one-block Ming-dynasty walled garden, teahouse, and koi pond. A perfect hour-long mid-day reset.

  • 04

    Alberta Rose Theatre

A restored 1927 neighborhood theater two blocks from the house. Music, comedy, the occasional silent film.

Shops & Markets

  • 01

    Tender Loving Empire

Records, letterpress art, small-batch ceramics, and books from PNW makers. Everything is from someone you could meet.

  • 02

    Portland Saturday Market

An open-air crafts market by the river, Saturdays and Sundays March through Christmas. Come hungry.

Markets & Groceries

  • 01

    New Seasons Market (Concordia)

The closest full grocery. Excellent deli, great local produce, and reasonable prices for the neighborhood.

  • 02

    Cheese Bar

A small shop-plus-counter with 150+ cheeses. Build a picnic board to take to the park — they'll wrap it.
